The Summer Institute on Aging has been held in north-central West Virginia since the late 1970s. Sponsored by the WVU School of Social Work the conference provides professional development opportunities for social workers, counselors and nurses who work with the aging population in West Virginia and its neighboring states. The institute is an elective course for Bachelor of Social Work, Master of Social Work and graduate gerontology certificate students West Virginia University. In 2015, over 215 people attended the conference, 90 percent of whom were from West Virginia, representing 40 of the 55 of the state's counties.
